Dean Amar is New President-Elect of the American Academy of Nursing

October 02, 2025

Dean Angela F. Amar, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, has been elected President-Elect of the American Academy of Nursing— one of the most prestigious and influential organizations in the profession, representing top leaders in nursing practice, education, management, and research.

As President-Elect, Dean Amar will play a vital role in shaping the Academy’s strategic direction, policy influence, and national voice at the intersection of health care, equity, and nursing leadership. She and the newly elected members of the organization’s board of directors and committees will assume their leadership roles at the Academy’s annual meeting on Oct. 18, 2025.

After serving a two-year term as President-Elect, Dean Amar will become AAN’s president. Election to leadership roles within the Academy reflects a career of extraordinary impact and peer recognition at the highest level.

Outgoing Academy President Linda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN, FNAP, FAAN, praised Dean Amar’s leadership.

“Dr. Amar’s dedication to service, equity, and strategic governance exemplifies the spirit of our Fellowship,” Dr. Scott said. “As my own term comes to an end, I am inspired by the caliber and commitment of leaders like Dr. Amar who will continue to advance the Academy’s mission at a critical time for health care and nursing policy.”

Dean Amar, inducted as an Academy Fellow in 2011, has built a nationally recognized career advancing diversity in nursing leadership and improving support for survivors of violence and trauma. Her pioneering research in gender-based violence has shaped campus policies across the U.S., with a focus on increasing help-seeking behavior among individuals experiencing dating violence. A sought-after expert, she has made significant contributions to the profession's understanding of trauma-informed care and equitable health practices.

Dean Amar, who is also the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor of Nursing, came to Meyers in August 2023 from the deanship of the School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She was also a tenured faculty member at Emory University and Boston College.

In her previous roles within the Academy, Dean Amar served as Co-Chair of the Trauma and Violence Expert Panel, completed two terms on the Board of Directors (2020–2024), and was an active member of several high-level advisory and governance groups. Notably, she played a central role in the development of the Board's strategic charter and policies following the Academy’s revised bylaws in 2022.

“I am honored to serve the Fellowship as President-Elect. I have a long tenure volunteering with the organization and see the potential we have to harness the powerful thought leadership of the Fellows to help advance our vision of healthy lives for all people,” said Dr. Amar. “I pride myself on being intentional, forward-thinking, and humanistic. I pledge to focus on enhancing member engagement, advancing nursing excellence, and engaging in policy advocacy and leadership to advance health equity and promote justice.”
