WHY?

  • Abortion restrictions nationwide, driving states that support legal abortion to carry a 400% increase in patient volume
  • Almost all abortion training programs are geared for physicians, with very few options for APRNs to be trained
  • There is an opportunity to provide a DIFFERENT way of doing abortion and sexual-reproductive health care, which is nurse-led, person-centered

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the U.S. Supreme Court, the need for increased access to abortion care and for more abortion providers was made clear. It has long been hypothesized that we could rapidly expand the abortion providing workforce by investing in Nursing. Originally conceptualized in 2018 at the University of California, San Francisco, to support nurse scholars in research pursuing abortion and sexual/reproductive health care, ACTIONS has expanded to include the University of Washington and, most recently, the New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing.

ACTIONS at NYU Meyers is being developed to meet the need for innovation in clinical training and supporting the abortion care workforce emerging from one of the leading nursing schools in the country. For more information about our latest research, you can find relevant publications from the ACTIONS team across all three universities in the link below.
