NYU Meyers awarded grant from Jonas Philanthropies to fund doctoral nursing student

NYU Meyers has been awarded a grant of $15,000 from Jonas Philanthropies, a leading national philanthropic funder of graduate nursing education. The grant, matched by funds from NYU Meyers, will support PhD student Amy Warner as a Jonas Nurse Scholar.

Warner is one of more than 75 Jonas Nurse Scholars pursuing PhD, DNP, or EdD degrees at 49 universities across the country whose doctoral work will focus on critical health priorities such as Environmental Health, Vision Health, Psych-Mental Health, and/or Veterans Health.  The new 2021-2023 cohort of Jonas Nurse Scholars joins more than 1,000 Jonas Scholar alumni representing 157 universities across all 50 states.

Warner’s research focuses on health disparities among LGBTQ youth, particularly the higher rates of adverse behavioral health outcomes among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children when compared to non-TGD children. Parents of TGD children can play a significant role in mitigating some of these disparities. Yet, parents raising TGD children often face challenges including stigmatization, uncertainty, and systems (e.g., health and educational) that fail to meet the needs of their child.

“Little is known about the effects of these challenges on parents’ own emotional well-being, which is important because parents’ well-being can affect children’s health,” said Warner. “My research aims to address this gap by exploring the emotional well-being of parents as they raise a transgender or gender diverse child.”

As a grant recipient, NYU Meyers joins Jonas Philanthropies’ efforts to improve the quality of healthcare by investing in nursing scholars whose research and clinical work address our nation’s most urgent needs. Grants empower and support nursing students with financial assistance, leadership development, and networking to expand the pipeline of future nursing faculty, researchers, and advanced practice nurses.
