Upsilon Scholarships & Grants Info

2023 Scholarship and Grant Applications

Our 2023 application cycle will open on March 3, 2023. Applications will be due by March 31, 2023, with notification provided no later than April 7, 2023.

 

Upsilon Chapter is offering up to $5,500 in scholarships and grants each year. Upsilon will be awarding:

  • two undergraduate scholarships at $500 each for a traditional or accelerated baccalaureate student at NYU Meyers
  • two graduate scholarships at $500 each for a student in any accredited graduate nursing program at any level (Master's, DNP, PhD)
  • two research (PhD) or EBP / QI project (DNP) grants of up to an individual maximum of $1,500 each, for a total of $3,000 awarded to support:           
    • completion of a research dissertation (PhD)
    • completion of an EBP / QI project (DNP)
  • one Friend of Nursing award at $500 for an individual or organization that is ineligible for regular membership but has impacted the chapter

Only NYU undergraduate students are eligible for Undergraduate Nursing Student Scholarships, they do not have to be Upsilon Chapter members. All Upsilon Chapter members may be eligible for Graduate Nursing Student Scholarships and Doctoral Grants.

Nursing Scholarships and Grants

Purpose

The purpose of Nursing Scholarships and Grants is to encourage and support student members and potential members of the Upsilon Chapter who demonstrate leadership and scholarship.  

Friend of Nursing Award

Purpose

The Friend of Nursing Award is conferred by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) chapters to recognize individuals and organizations that are ineligible for regular membership but have impacted the chapter, the local nursing or health care community, and/or the health of people in a significant way.

Upsilon Chapter Scholarship Fund

The amount of funds requested, the number of requests, and the availability of monies in the Upsilon Chapter Scholarship Fund will determine the amount of a scholarship, grant, or award. Monies awarded are:

  1. Undergraduate Scholarship     $500 each
  2. Graduate Scholarship              $500 each
  3. Doctoral Grant                         $1,500 each
  4. Friend of Nursing Award          $500 each

There will be a competitive basis for fund allocation based on the following criteria:

1. Quality of written goals

2. Contribution or potential contribution to nursing and public benefit

3. Upsilon Chapter Scholarship Fund budget and number of proposals submitted.

Scholarships, Grants, and Awards Committee

The Scholarship, Grants, and Awards Committee consists of a chairperson and other members as designated by the Board of Directors. The committee receives and evaluates applications and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors for award approval. Presentation of awards will be made at the Induction Ceremony.

Expectations

All graduate nursing scholarship and doctoral grant recipients are expected to maintain membership within Upsilon Chapter and to contribute to the Upsilon Chapter through attendance of board meetings, submission of articles to the newsletter, or presentation at Upsilon Chapter events.

Nursing Student Scholarship Award

Upsilon Chapter, STTI Award Criteria and Eligibility:

Baccalaureate Students (Traditional and Accelerated Students)

  1. Must be enrolled in the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing on a full-time basis.
  2. Must have attained an overall grade point average of 3.5 and have no incomplete grades.
  3. Must be able to demonstrate involvement in activities within NYU College of Nursing, the University, or community, and overall leadership activities.
  4. Must have at least one semester left to be eligible in using the award.

Graduate Students

  1. Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing graduate program on a full-time or part-time basis.
  2. Must have completed at least one-fourth of the required nursing courses.
  3. Must be a member of good standing in the Upsilon Chapter of STTI.
  4. Must have attained an overall grade point average of 3.5 and have no incomplete grades.
  5. Must demonstrate accomplishment and leadership in professional and community activities.

Doctoral Students (PhD and DNP Students)

  1. Must be a member of good standing in the Upsilon Chapter of STTI.
  2. Must have a minimum educational preparation of a Master’s degree in Nursing or in a related field.
  3. DNP candidates must have an approved EBP / QI project proposal at the time of application submission or a letter from their DNP Faculty Chair stating that the proposal will be defended before the application submission deadline.
  4. PhD candidates must have an approved dissertation research proposal at the time of application submission or a letter from their dissertation chairperson stating that the proposal will be defended before the application submission deadline.
  5. Qualitative or quantitative research approaches and designs will be considered for dissertation research.
  6. A copy of the signed dissertation research or EBP /QI project proposal approval form or letter should be included in the application appendix.
  7. Only the attached dissertation research or EBP /PI proposal guidelines, application forms, and agreement forms will be accepted.

 

Friend of Nursing

Nominations can be accepted only by chapter members. Examples of individuals and organizations that may be nominated (not an inclusive list):

  1. A printer that produces the chapter’s newsletter consistently and with a high level of excellence
  2. A person who produces and/or maintains the chapter’s website.
  3. A local business that consistently sponsors the chapter or donates time, money, resources, or services for chapter events.
  4. A member of a nursing school’s support staff who consistently exceeds the expectations required of his or her job.
  5. Non-nursing instructors who have taken additional steps to help teach nursing students at their university
  6. Individuals who have made significant contributions to nursing or to advance the nursing profession or the health of people on a local or regional level.

Nominees for the Friend of Nursing Award must:

  1. Demonstrate a commitment to the ideals and purposes of Sigma Theta Tau International.
  2. Demonstrate superior achievement and leadership in their field of work.
  3. Contribute to the long-term significance of the chapter, the nursing profession, and/or the health of people within a local or regional area. Nominators are responsible for submitting a complete application packet. Incomplete packets will not be considered.

Baccalaureate and Graduate Students

Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application packet. Incomplete packets will not be considered. All applications must include the following:

  1. A completed Application Form.
  2. An official school transcript.
  3. A personal statement (not to exceed 2 pages) in narrative form, which will include professional and /or community activities within the past three years. Specify the type of activity, and participation (e.g. elected or voluntary, committee member or individual participant), and specify tasks, projects, roles, outcomes, and goals accomplished.
  4. Current resume/curriculum vitae (limited to 2 pages).
  5. Two letters of recommendation documenting contributions to professional, community, and/or scholarly activities.

Doctoral Students

Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application packet. Incomplete packets will not be considered. All applications must include the following:

  1. A completed Application Form.
    1. PhD Grant Application
    2. DNP Grant Application
  2. A completed Agreement Form (found within the application linked above).
  3. A completed proposal, based on the attached Quantitative Research Proposal Guidelines or Qualitative Research Proposal Guidelines.
  4. Institutional Review Board approval or notice of exemption, if available.
  5. Curriculum vitae for principal investigator and all co-investigators.
  6. Completed Budget Form (found within the application linked above).

Friend of Nursing Award

  1. A completed Application Form.
  2. One- to two-page letter from the nominator specifying how the nominee meets the criteria.
