NYU Meyers Visiting Scholars Program

Over the past decade, NYU Meyers has hosted nearly 50 Visiting Scholars from around the globe, including Brazil, China, Lithuania, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Appointment Duration: Up to one year (renewable). 

Status: Non-employee, guest status (no salary, teaching duties, or course enrolment privileges). 

Housing & Workspace: Scholars are responsible for securing NYC housing. Limited housing assistance may be available through NYU's Global Research Initiatives. Desk space may be provided subject to availability. 

Included Resources: Visiting Scholars receive guidance from an assigned NYU faculty mentor, and access to NYU resources such as NYU Library System, NYU ID card, NYU email account, essential digital access, etc.

Academic Credentials: Master’s degree (or equivalent) minimum; established expertise aligning with NYU Meyers faculty disciplines/research areas. 

Purpose: A defined, actionable goal for the visit. 

Additional Requirements for International Applicants (J-1 Visa / Fulbright): 

• Eligibility for a J-1 Exchange Visa or current Fulbright Scholar status. 
• Proof of Funding: Minimum $3,000 USD/month (plus $1,000/month for a spouse and $500/month per child) from personal, institutional, or government sources. 
• Certified health insurance covering the entire stay (J-1 visa requirement).

Application Deadlines 

Applicants not requiring a visa: Submit all materials at least 6 weeks prior to your intended start date. 

Applicants requiring a visa: Submit all materials at least 4 months prior to your intended start date. 

Application Process 

Step 1: Identify a Faculty Sponsor

Identify and connect with an NYU Meyers faculty member whose research/expertise aligns with your proposal. 

Step 2: Submit Preliminary Information 

• Email your sponsor (CC: nursing.global@nyu.edu) with your CV (including DOB, phone, address, email) and the following details: 
• Proposed start and end dates (MM/DD/YYYY) 
• Full legal name, date of birth, phone number, and non-NYU email adress 
• Permanent residential address (no business addresses) 
• Country of citizenship and highest degree (degree & institution) 
• Home institution/employer and country (Note: list self-employed/retired, if applicable; do not list Visiting Scholar) 
• Government sponsor/funder (if applicable) 
• Detailed description of planned activities (3–5 sentences) 

Step 3: Complete Registration in the NYU ViSITS Portal 

Once the faculty mentor/administrator proxy initiates the Visting Scholar Program application request in ViSITS, the applicant will receive an email prompting them to claim their user account and complete the account setup steps. Review the User Guide for Applicants to set up your account and complete the program application in NYU ViSITS (pay close attention to required attachments in Step 4 of the user guire). 

Step 4: J-1 Visa Applicants Only 

• Email the following to nursing.global@nyu.edu: 
• Completed DS-2019 Request Form (form sent to the applicant after NYU Meyers Global Initiatives receives their Visiting Scholar application) Scanned copy of passport bio page 
• Proof of financial support Fulbright documentation (if applicable) 

Note: International scholars are responsible for paying all applicable U.S. government and visa processing fees.

Internal Review & Clearances: Completed visiting scholar applications undergo initial internal review and approval before being routed for institutional clearance through NYU’s Office of Academic Appointments (OAA) and Office of Ethics and Compliance (OEC). 

Visa Processing & Embassy Next Steps: Following OAA and OEC approvals, if applicable, NYU Meyers submits the approved visiting scholar application and required J-1 visa application documentation to the Office of Global Services (OGS) to issue the DS-2019 form. Once the DS-2019 is issued, the applicant may schedule a visa interview with their local U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

While NYU Meyers does not currently charge a program participation fee, Visiting Scholars are responsible for all associated expenses, including airfare, accommodation, meals, and general living costs.

On September 1, 2026, NYU will transition from a manual PDF/paper form to an electronic form using the new Visiting Scholars Information and Tracking System (ViSITS) to manage the application process for the Visiting Scholars Program. The transition to a centralized system supports increased transparency during the review process, allows for more thorough vetting of applicants, supports alignment with University policies and regulatory compliance, ensures data integrity, and reduces reliance on paper forms. 

Similar to the previous manual PDF/paper form, Faculty Sponsors will still be able to have applications for the Visting Scholar Program submitted on their behalf by an administrative proxy in the Office of Global Initiatives. Please note that although proxies can submit applications, the faculty sponsor will need to approve the application in ViSITS before it moves to school leadership for their review.
