Dr. Strumpf's legacy serves as a reminder of the profound impact that dedicated professionals can have on the lives of older adults and their families.
Neville E. Strumpf, PhD, RN, FAAN is Professor of Nursing and former Interim Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She came to Penn Nursing in 1982 as an Assistant Professor and during the next several decades established herself as a world renowned nurse leader, expert in gerontology nursing, and extraordinary teacher and mentor.
Throughout her scholarly career, Dr. Strumpf’s research has focused on care for frail older adults, quality of life, services for refugee elders, end-of-life care, and fall prevention. Her seminal work in reducing physical restraints which she conducted with her research partner, Dr. Lois Evans, first published in 1988, showed the emotional and physical harms of being restrained and established a scientific basis for restraint-free care. By 2000, after significant advocacy and policy efforts at the national level, restraint-free care was widely recognized as the standard of practice, especially in nursing homes, and has since been adopted in countries around the globe.
