The Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program in the U.S. Borderland
Tara A Cortes
The overarching goal of the GWEP in the Borderland is to provide bilingual geriatric education and training for healthcare and supportive geriatric care workforces, focusing on the comprehensive care of older adults including persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD), particularly within underserved Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN), and veteran communities. Our collaboration with the Tigua Tribe of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, the Rio Grande Area Agency on Aging, and many other geriatric agencies will enhance urban, rural, and tribal patient and family engagement, addressing care gaps and improving health outcomes for older adults by integrating geriatrics and ADRD into primary care and relevant specialties, utilizing the Age-Friendly Health Systems Framework.
