Prof. Jamesetta (Jamie) Newland is Clinical Professor Emerita at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. A strong proponent of faculty practice, she spent much of her clinical practice in nurse-managed health centers (NMHCs), holding positions as direct care nurse practitioner (NP), administrative director, and consultant to other academic nursing schools on NMHCs and faculty practice. She has taught master's and doctoral students since 1993. Considered an expert in NP education and practice, her services have been sought internationally by schools of nursing in Botswana, China, Japan, and Lithuania, and she was instrumental in establishing the first advanced nursing practice master's programs in Japan and Lithuania. She is a Certified Global Nurse Consultant with the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CFGSN).
Newland has numerous scholarly publications to her credit and has been the editor-in- chief of The Nurse Practitioner journal for many years. She spends most of her time participating in professional organizations and remains committed to lifelong learning. She promotes building partnerships with patients to provide the best care. Social justice is central to her work, which she instills in the next generation of nurses through ongoing mentorship, developing future leaders who are driven to address inequity and disparities in health and all areas of the human experience.

(Vols. 19, Issues 5, pp. 269-278). 10.1016/S8755-7223(03)00101-7AbstractThis article presents a brief overview of the historic evolution of nursing faculty practice, with an emphasis on the integration of practice into the traditional academic triad model of teaching, scholarship, and service. Different practice models are discussed and the pros and cons of faculty practice are reviewed. An evaluation of the more than 25 years of faculty practice at the Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University, is presented as an exemplar. This analysis was based on survey results and informal interviews. Two major outcomes are discussed: the formation of a support group for faculty who are practicing and a recommendation for a University-wide cultural shift.Commentary on 'Screening for chlamydia infection : recommendations and rationale'.

(Vols. 31, Issues 3, pp. 471-486).AbstractThe authors look at many aspects of a nurse-managed primary care center within an academic institution, as administrators and practicing clinicians. This article presents the history of the development of the center, the profile of clients and services, the education and preparation for the role of nurse practitioner and scope of practice, reimbursement, legal issues such as collaborative practice and barriers to practice, and risk management. Problems faced by many nurse-managed centers are addressed, especially the need for flexibility, with personal accounts of how they have been dealt with at this center. An evaluation of the center and its practice model is offered. -
