Halia Melnyk's additional information

Halia Melnyk is an Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing trainee in her 4th year of the program.  Her research interest is the use of systems approaches to examine factors influencing health and work-related outcomes in working women with breast cancer.  She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Hunter College, CUNY, and a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University. Her clinical background prior to that was in medical-surgical bedside nursing, critical care nursing in the recovery room at Bellevue Hospital, and nursing education.  After receiving her MPH, she spent two years in Ukraine as a Peace Corps volunteer, which related to participation in a USAID initiative to help local hospitals form western partnerships in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Upon her return to the US she worked as a clinical trial nurse in diabetes research (NYU School of Medicine) for eleven years.  More recently she undertook various roles at NYU Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI) as a Research Subject Advocate. She acted as a liaison with the Institutional Review Board in efforts to streamline research study safety review processes, boost recruitment initiatives, and foster national program efforts to establish common metrics and best practices within NYU and across the CTSI network. These roles led to her taking a position as Nursing Research Program Coordinator for multiple departmental research initiatives and her subsequent interest in pursuing a nursing PhD.
