Urban Nighttime Lighting Index

PI/Director
Funding source
NYU School of Global Public Health
Project Period

The Urban Nighttime Lighting Index has as its mission to improve human health for all city residents, workers, and visitors by documenting locations of excessive artificial lighting at night. With three New York City sites as case studies, our project will demonstrate its efficacy by focusing on districts, paths, and individual “hotspots.” Rollout to cover all boroughs of New York City is anticipated. As a tool, the Urban Nighttime Lighting Index will enable policymakers and individuals to benchmark a location's nighttime light exposure against acceptable human health standards.
